This year’s collection marks their 8th year of the Emerging Local Authors program and contains their largest collection to date!

Over 260 books from new and returning local authors and illustrators are available for you to check out — including a selection of short fiction anthologies written by students aged 9 to 18 from Story Studio’s virtual writing program.

Since the program’s launch in 2015, GVPL has displayed over 900 authors and over 1,300 book titles — that’s a lot of talent all in one spot!

“The Emerging Local Authors Collection supports and celebrates Greater Victoria’s rich writing culture. This initiative has become integral to our library’s commitment to supporting local talent and promoting books that might not be available through traditional channels,” said Maureen Sawa, CEO of the Greater Victoria Public Library.

Are you hoping to get involved?

Every fall, GVPL invites authors to apply for the annual Emerging Local Authors Collection. To participate, authors or illustrators have to live on southern Vancouver Island or have resided there during the full publication process.

“We are delighted to showcase these books prominently at the library, allowing readers to discover and enjoy the literary gems from our region,” said Andrew Appleton, the Greater Victoria Public Library Board Chair.

The 2023 Emerging Local Authors Collection is displayed at the library’s Central Branch and can be placed on hold for pickup at any GVPL branch. Ebooks are also available!
