RCMP are investigating after a person was found deceased at an apartment fire in Port Alberni Thursday night.

Shortly after 11 p.m. May 18th, firefighters from the Port Alberni, Beaver Creek, Cherry Creek, and Sproat Lake Fire Departments were dispatched to a structure fire in the 3600 block of 4th Avenue.

Residents were being evacuated from the building as fire crews extinguished the blaze. During a search of the building, a body was located in one of the suites and the area was secured for investigation.

“We thank the community for their understanding and patience as we continue to work on this investigation,” says Mike Owens, Port Alberni’s fire chief.

The family of the deceased have been notified and the name of the person has not been released.

Port Alberni RCMP said the department is investigating the fire, along with the BC Coroner Service, the fire department, and Office of the Fire Commissioner.

RCMP say the family of the deceased have been notified and provided supports.

The cause of the fire and  fatality are under investigation.

Residents who were displaced from the apartment building are being assisted by the Bread of Life.
