An 18-year-old man was arrested after throwing himself onto the windshield of a moving cab and proceeded to rip the driver from the vehicle and steal the car.

Police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating the driver of a car that was nearby who may have witnessed the incident.

Just after midnight on Saturday, April 15th, West Shore RCMP were called to the scene of the carjacking near the 2300-block of Sooke Road.

The suspect was identified as an 18-year-old man from Colwood and he has been arrested and charged on five criminal offenses.

He has been charged with assault, assault causing bodily harm, assaulting a police officer, mischief to property under $5,000 and theft of a motor vehicle.

“The taxi driver sustained significant injuries and was taken to hospital,” said Cpl. Nancy Saggar, West Shore RCMP Media Relations Officer.

“Carjackings like this are rare, as the suspect has been identified and arrested we do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public.”

Police say they believe there are witnesses who have yet to come forward. A white car could be seen in the video footage provided by police officers, but the vehicle did not stop at the scene of the grand theft auto.

West Shore RCMP are asking the driver and/or passengers of the white car to come forward and speak to investigators.

Anyone in the white vehicle or any witnesses to this incident who have not yet spoken to police should call West Shore RCMP at (250) 474-2264.
