Toys “R” Us officially announces they are moving into Uptown Shopping Centre

Canada’s favourite toy store is making a triumphant return to Victoria just a hop, skip and a jump away from their former Mayfair Shopping Centre location.

The rumour mill had been churning with where Toys “R” Us would end up after they announced their closure at Mayfair Shopping Centre in early January.

Since then, the former location has been taken over by H Mart, and the Korean focused grocery store announced they would take over the space and open sometime in late 2023 or early 2024.

On Wednesday, May 17th, the CEO of Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us, Doug Putman announced that since he had acquired the majority of the now defunct Canadian Bed Bath & Beyond locations, he had the opportunity to bring several new Toys “R” Us locations to many regions across Canada.

There will be three new locations in BC and one is right here in Victoria, located in Uptown’s former Forever 21 location beside H&M.

The new location will be a much different layout than the Mayfair Shopping Centre iteration of Toys “R” Us which was around 30,000 square feet. The new Uptown Mall spot will be a bit smaller at just over 23,000 square feet and spread out over two levels.

“Uptown is proud to welcome Toys R us to our property this fall,” said Kristy Lowes, General Manager of Uptown. “This two level 23,285 square feet retailer will occupy the space next to H&M.”

“We are delighted to add another great retailer to our strong mix of national and local brands.”

This announcement means the new location will have 30 to 40 new job positions opening up and the plan is to open the new location sometime this summer.

Burnaby and Kamloops are the other two BC cities to get new Toys “R” Us locations and there are eight more locations announced through the rest of the country.
