Two men killed in Mayne Island single-vehicle crash on Saturday

RCMP are investigating a single-vehicle crash on Mayne Island that claimed the life of two men over the May long weekend.

Shortly before 10 p.m. on Saturday May 20th, Outer Gulf Islands RCMP were called to Merryman Drive after receiving reports of a crash.

Police believe the driver of a 1995 Firebird failed to negotiate a curve and went off  the road before crashing into a tree.

Two men—one in his early 40s, and one in his late 40s—were pronounced dead at the scene.

“While the investigation is in the early stages, alcohol and speed may be contributing factors in the crash,” said RCMP spokesman Staff Sgt. Kris Clark in an email statement to Victoria Buzz.

Following that crash, another accident was reported about 30 minutes further up Vancouver Island.

At around 10:30 p.m., Denman Island Fire Rescue were called to a high-velocity single-vehicle rollover crash on the corner of Denman and East roads.

Responding firefighters freed the 26-year-old driver using hydraulic tool and was fortunate to have only suffered minor injuries.

“Thank you to the bystanders who initiated the call and remained on scene until we arrived,” Denman Island fire Rescue said in a Facebook post.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
