We all know Canadians love their national delicacies—and some of our favourites are more predictable than others.
Just in time for Canada Day, Chefs Plate has compiled over 271,000 searches over the last month to come up with a list of Canada’s favourite dishes based on the top items.
Can you guess what number one is?
Yep, it’s poutine! Coming in hot with over 90,000 searches.
This is a quintessential Canadian comfort dish — consisting of french fries topped with cheese curds and doused in gravy.
Are we surprised it’s number one?
Following shortly behind, bannock has come in second for top favourite dishes. Bannock is a type of bread made from flour, baking powder, salt and water, which is then fried or baked.
Absolutely delicious and packs a lot of history worth looking into!

Vancouver Island can be proud of the next one in particular, as it originated right in Nanaimo!
The famous Nanaimo Bars is a layered dessert made with a crumb base, custard-flavoured butter icing, and a chocolate ganache topping.
A true celebration staple!
“Whether you’re firing up the grill for a Canada Day BBQ, heading to the park for a picnic or gathering your loved ones for a dinner party, these signature Canadian dishes will take centre stage,” said spokesperson from Chefs Plate.
