A medical incident is believed to be the cause of a fatal crash on the Trans Canada Highway (HWY 1) near Nanaimo Friday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called HWY 1 just before noon near the intersection of Tenth Street following a six vehicle crash.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, a 73-year-old man suffered a medical incident while driving along HWY 1.

According to reports, the vehicle the man was driving was moving at a high rate of speed before crashing into three other vehicles, which caused those vehicles to strike two additional cars near the intersection.

In a short media release, Cpl. Alex Berube of the BC RCMP said Hwy 1 between Haliburton Street and Tenth Street will be closed for a significant amount of time.

A passenger in the vehicle of the 73-year-old old man was transported to hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.
