Several CTV journalists in Victoria among Bell Media’s latest job cuts

Several media personalities in Victoria were among Bell Media’s latest job cuts.

On June 14th, many employees of Bell Canada Enterprises (BCE) were laid off across the country as the company says it is going through some “organizational changes”.

Over 1,300 employees lost their jobs in the mass layoff and six radio stations were taken off air because BCE says it incurs around $40 million in annual operating losses and over $250 million in phone revenue losses.

In Victoria and on Vancouver Island specifically, all Virgin Radio and CFAX employees are safe in their jobs for the time being, but several CTV Vancouver Island employees did receive a notice of being laid off.

Notably, among CTV Vancouver Island’s layoffs was the beloved former five o’clock news anchor, Jordan Cunningham, who had been with the company for nearly 20 years.

Two other Vancouver Island journalists have spoken out online about their jobs being lost alongside Cunningham. Gord Kubis, a now former CTV videographer based in Comox Valley and Warren Dean, CTV Vancouver Island’s former weather anchor.

BCE President and CEO, Mirko Bibic, released a statement in which he announced the layoffs and cutbacks while attempting to steer the rhetoric to a sentiment of hope for what’s to come.

“These changes will reduce our workforce by 1,300 positions, where possible eliminating vacant positions to minimize the impact on our team,” said Bibic. “These roles are largely in management, which will see a reduction of 6%.”

“We know our decisions have a real impact on our friends and colleagues. That’s why it is so important for me to ensure respect and transparency throughout the process.”

Although some Vancouver Island journalists lost their jobs, CTV Vancouver Island and all BCE’s properties on Vancouver Island will still be operational. The same can’t be said for several radio stations across the country.

Vancouver’s BNN Bloomberg Radio 1410 and Funny 1040, Winnipeg’s Funny 1290, Calgary’s Funny 1060, Edmonton’s TSN 1260 Radio along with London’s NewsTalk 1290 were all shuttered as of June 14th by BCE.
