‘Habitat Victoria needs you!’: Annual Gingerbread Showcase open for registration

Share

These aren’t your typical gingerbread shack with some sloppy icing.

Habitat for Humanity is putting on their 15th annual Gingerbread Showcase and they are looking for new chefs, artists and architects to bake them an entry.

The Gingerbread Showcase is their annual fundraiser which helps them operate their non-profit organization through the year. Last year, they raised nearly $74,000.

The event takes place late November through until early January where onlookers can come by the Parkside Hotel and Bar and cast their votes for their favourite ones.

This year the theme for all contestants will be ‘Family Traditions.’

“Whether it is your family or chosen family, a holiday tradition, or a summer memory, we know this year’s theme will bring some amazing pieces to the Showcase,” said Jenessa Mattson Manager, Marketing & Communications for Habitat for Humanity.

“This could be a special recipe passed down through generations, a cherished memory that brings joy each year, or a celebration of friendship — the possibilities are endless.”

For this friendly competition, Habitat for Humanity is looking for individuals, families, friends or other teams who are ready to take on the gingerbread challenge whether they are a professional baker, artist, designer, architect or just a fan of baking.

“Habitat Victoria needs you,” Mattson exclaimed.

The rules for entry are simple — everything used in the entry must be edible, they must take up a 24 square inch base provided by Habitat Victoria and lastly, each entry must be roughly 18 inches tall at its highest point.

Aside from a People’s Choice Award, a panel of judges will determine the best creation in each of  five categories and give awards to the ones that really blew them away. The other award categories are:

  • Best first impression
  • Best use of skill & technique
  • Best interpretation of the theme
  • Most creative and original
  • Most diverse use of ingredients

Habitat of Humanity Victoria says that spaces for contestants are limited and those wishing to take part in this mainstay Christmas event should go to their website to register.
