A routine evening turned into a devastating accident when a person on a scooter was struck by a van in a downtown Victoria crosswalk.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. Thursday, July 28th at the intersection of Douglas and Chatham streets.

Eyewitnesses reported that a white van was heading westbound on Douglas Street when the collision occurred.

The victim, a man whose identity has not been released, was attempting to cross the street in the designated crosswalk when the van collided with the man, trapping him underneath.

Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene, and the area around the accident was cordoned off with yellow police tape. The road was closed for several hours as police conducted their initial investigations and worked to provide medical assistance to the injured individual.

Witnesses in the area looked on as VicPD, firefighters, and paramedics worked in unison to rescue the trapped victim from beneath the van.

In the aftermath of the accident, the victim was transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance.

In a email statement to Victoria Buzz, VicPD said the injuries sustained by the pedestrian were non-life threatening.

The investigation into the incident is still in its early stages, according to the VicPD statement. As a result, specific details about the cause of the accident and any potential factors involved are yet to be revealed.
