A single vehicle collision in the early morning hours of Friday has left one man dead and another injured.
At around 9 a.m. on August 11th, Drive BC tweeted that the road would be closed due to a motor vehicle incident not far from its Highway 19 access near Port Hardy.
For approximately two hours, vehicles traversing Holberg Road had to wait patiently while RCMP investigated the scene of the incident with no detour routes available.
Just before 11 a.m. Drive BC provided an update saying the road has now been cleared with traffic flowing in both directions once again.
According to police, just after 4:30 a.m. a single vehicle collision occurred which caused one fatality.
The driver, a 21-year-old man, was trapped inside his black Mitsubishi Outlander. Police say he had to be extracted from the vehicle and transported to hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
The passenger of the vehicle, a 24-year-old man, died at the scene.
“Alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash,” said Corporal Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for the RCMP in British Columbia.
