Heads up motorists!

Fortis BC, Esquimalt Fire Rescue and VicPD are all on scene on the Esquimalt side of Tillicum Bridge to deal with a gas main which was struck by construction crews  this morning.

At around 10:20 a.m. an alert was issued and the Tillicum Bridge has been shut down until the gas main can be dealt with by attending crews.

The incident occurred at 1075 Tillicum Road, the site of the old Gorge Point Pub. This week construction crews have been working on the site for the first time since the old building was demolished.

Once the leak was discovered, Tillicum Bridge was entirely shut down for a short period of time while a repair plan was put into action.

Now, motorists are still being asked to avoid the area, but Tillicum Road only has one lane closed while fire and Fortis crews work to stop the leak and repair the gas line.

Fortis BC says that the severity of the leak was not major; however, the timeline for it to be fully repaired is not yet known at this point.
