The Tugwell Creek wildfire just outside of Sooke has now been updated to ‘being held.’
This means that the fire is not likely to spread anymore beyond predetermined boundaries under current conditions.
The wildfire was discovered in the afternoon of Tuesday, August 1st and at around 8 a.m. on Thursday, August 3rd, it was downgraded from out of control to its current status.
The blaze is located approximately 5 kilometres from Shirley and around 10 kilometers from Sooke.
At its largest, the fire grew to about 1.85 hectares in size, which was recorded early on Thursday morning.
Two attack crews with three units of heavy machinery were deployed by the BC Wildfire Service and were able to suppress the flames quickly enough for the fire to stop growing.
“Crews and equipment have completed a machine guard on the east flank of the fire and are working on a hose lay and 10ft black line,” wrote a BC Wildfire Service spokesperson in the incident report.
They also have declared the fire to be a “smouldering, low ground fire” which likely won’t spread much further.
In addition to the Tugwell Creek wildfire being downgraded, the second blaze to emerge near Sayward — which was declared to be out of control by the BC Wildfire Service on Wednesday, August 2nd — has been completely extinguished.
