An inmate, who was serving a sentence for second-degree murder, has died in custody at the William Head Institution in Metchosin.

On September 2nd, Richard Paul Preston, a long-serving inmate passed away while in custody.

He had been serving an indeterminate sentence for second-degree murder since April 1994. The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

As per CSC protocol, the police and the coroner have been notified, and a comprehensive inquiry into the incident is now underway.

The specific details surrounding Preston’s death have not been disclosed by the CSC at this time.

However, it has been confirmed that his next of kin have been informed of his passing.
