The Malahat is closed in both directions Thursday afternoon following a motor vehicle crash.
Motorists in the area said a gravel truck with a trailer struck the median before flipping on its side and catching fire.
DriveBC confirmed the stretch of highway near Bamberton is closed and that emergency crews were on scene.
While unconfirmed, the driver of the truck was able to escape the vehicle. A witness on the scene said they spoke to the driver who said his “steer tire” blew causing him to strike the barrier and spin into the southbound lane.
