Medical emergency leads to single-vehicle fatal crash on Vancouver Island Monday

Tragedy struck on Highway 19A in Qualicum Beach on Monday morning after one person died following a single-vehicle crash.

The incident occurred just after 9 a.m. when the driver of a silver Ford pickup crossed the oncoming lane on the Island Highway, before coming to a stop on an empty lot near the Shady Rest.

According to BC Emergency Health Services, the call for help came in at 9:11 a.m. and three ambulances three ambulances and an air ambulance were dispatched.

“Paramedics cared for one patient but did not transport anyone to hospital.”

RCMP are now confirming there was one fatality and the cause of the crash was caused by a person experiencing a medical emergency.

Southbound traffic was disrupted for about an hour and a half as emergency crews responded.

An eyewitness, who observed the incident from a nearby balcony, reported a heart-wrenching account of the events that unfolded as officers broke the news to the victim’s family.

“I watched from a nearby balcony for a long time. The person did not survive and was never in any of the ambulances,’ said the eye witness.

“I watched as officers informed the family when they arrived. The deceased was taken away by the coroner/funeral home around 11:30 a.m.”
