As the holiday season ramps up, so will the presence of police check stops around Vancouver Island.

In a recent blitz, BC Highway Patrol (BCHP)-Campbell River stopped multiple impaired drivers over the course of six hours in early November.

On November 4th, an officer was patrolling in and around Courtenay, checking for high-risk driving behaviours—including impaired driving.

According to police, between 4:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., a total of six penalties for driving while impaired were issued, which meant an immediate roadside prohibition of three to 90 days depending on blood alcohol concentration and vehicle impoundments.

Additionally, police reported a driver with a novice license was pulled over and given a 12-hour driving prohibition for having a blood alcohol concentration above the required “0”.

Learner and novice drivers are required to have a “0” blood alcohol concentration at all times while driving.

“We continue to target those who choose to put themselves and others at risk by driving while impaired,” said Staff Sergeant Adam Tallboy, Acting OIC of BCHP.

“Although it is unfortunate that these drivers made the wrong decision, it speaks to the determination of BC Highway Patrol officers to making our highways safer.”
