There’s an interactive poetry writing and performance workshop coming to Victoria

Share

Attention poetry lovers!

For those whose passion resides in the written word or for those who wish to get more involved in the literary community, this is for you.

Poet Laureate Marie Metaphor Specht is inviting the community to participate in Poetry in Light, presented by the Greater Victoria Public Library and the City of Victoria.

Poetry in Light will include two poetry writing workshops and a performance!

Anyone aged 15 and up can register for one or both of these free workshops hosted by Metaphor Specht and join her in the exploration of various definitions of love and consider how it moves through our communities.

The first workshop, titled Writing from the Heart, will take place on Thursday, November 30th, and the second workshop, Love Letters from an Aching World, will be held on Thursday, December 7th.

Both workshops will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Greater Victoria Public Library sxʷeŋxʷəŋ təŋəxʷ James Bay Branch Library.

Workshop participants are then invited to participate in the final Poetry in Light performance alongside established local poets and spoken-word artists on Friday, January 12th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the sxʷeŋxʷəŋ təŋəxʷ James Bay Branch Library.

For audiences wishing to attend, the poems will explore the diverse spectrum of loving human relationships, including themes of 2SLGBTQIA+ love.

The poetry will be performed alongside the Love Begets Love artwork—a collaboration between workshop host Metaphor Specht and the Vice President of Limbic Media, Gabrielle Odowichuck.

The collaborative piece will contain interactive elements, including sculptural lighting using a sound-sensitive system to make live sound shift into patterns of light and colour!

Event attendees will see the magic of poetry translated into the language of light as heart-shaped lanterns shift in sync with each performer’s voice.

The Love Begets Love art will be first installed on November 27th, before the performance, so passersby can see it from then until the end of April 2024.

If you wish to register for Poetry of Light, visit the City of Victoria website.
