As the season of giving swings into full gear, United Way Southern Vancouver Island (UWSVI) is gearing up to tackle a pressing issue that hits close to home: food insecurity among seniors.
With Giving Tuesday on the horizon, UWSVI is calling on the community to join hands and hearts to make a difference.
What’s the Buzz About?
Giving Tuesday, slated for November 28th this year, has become a global phenomenon, urging individuals worldwide to support causes dear to their hearts.
Whether it’s contributing time, lending a helping hand to neighbors, or making donations to local charities, this movement encourages meaningful action.
The Heart of the Matter: Food Insecurity
Food insecurity—insufficient access to consistent, healthy food—is a significant challenge faced by communities worldwide, and our own isn’t exempt.
This issue hits especially hard among seniors in the Greater Victoria area, exacerbated by the current affordability crisis.
Our region boasts a substantial senior population, with nearly a quarter of residents aged over 65—a number projected to rise by 15% by 2025. Shockingly, research indicates that severe food insecurity can shorten life expectancy by up to nine years.
Low-income seniors are particularly vulnerable, with 84% reporting food scarcity tied to unaffordable housing, and nearly 1 in 5 facing this challenge most or all the time.
The Human Element: Supporting Our Seniors
United Way Southern Vancouver Island is rallying for change.
They believe in ensuring seniors age with dignity and respect, recognizing their invaluable contributions to our communities.
This Giving Tuesday, UWSVI aims to support seniors by backing a network of local social agencies dedicated to overcoming obstacles to secure nutritious meals.
A Double Dose of Generosity
The good news doesn’t stop there. Thanks to the unwavering support of Lynda and Murray Farmer and Barb and Steve McKerrell, UWSVI will match every contribution made on Giving Tuesday, up to $35,000.
It’s a chance to make your donation go even further in supporting those in need.
