Victoria-based Bella White has emerged as one of the best and brightest folk/country musicians whose sound is steeped in bluegrass influence.
After releasing her second album this year, she has gotten the opportunity to have written a song for a big-budget blockbuster movie which was released in theatres this week — The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
White was born in Calgary, but rose to fame only after she moved to Victoria.
Her first album Just Like Leaving was released in September 2020, as the pandemic still had the world in its clutches and it was instantly recognized as one of the best new folk/country records of the year.
She even caught the attention of Rolling Stone, who praised White’s songwriting as “sublime Appalachian heartbreak” in her debut, and American Highway called her record “authentic, genuine and wholesome.”
According to White, this album was an amalgam of songs she wrote over the span of her teen years.
“I’m still quite young, but I was very young when I wrote this album,” said White when the album was released.
“All of these songs came from processing my feelings right as I was experiencing certain things for the first time in my life.”
Now at 22-years-old, White continues to wow sold-out crowds throughout North America and even had the chance to have her Grand Ole Opry debut this summer following her April 2023 released, sophomore record, Among Other Things.

Now, one of her songs will be featured in the movie The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, as well as its soundtrack.
On this soundtrack, White joins the ranks of superstars such as Olivia Rodrigo, Sierra Ferrell, Molly Tuttle and Rachel Zegler — who stars in the film — in crafting the sonic identity of this massive film.
In an Instagram post announcing she had written a song for the soundtarck, White said, “I’m super happy to share with y’all that a song I wrote a whillllleeee back is part of the soundtrack for [The Hunger Games] movie, [The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes].”
“So many other sweet artists are involved. You can pre-save the album now and I can’t wait for you to hear it.”
The film was released last week and has already smashed box office expectations as well as garnering mostly positive reviews from critics worldwide.
