Greater Victoria will see its 800th Little Free Library open its tiny doors this Monday

Share

Books are food for the soul and Greater Victoria has no shortage of places to find something special, especially with the vastness of the ever-growing Little Free Library network.

This coming Monday, December 18th, that network will grow once more reaching a new milestone.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place with a number of Fernwood neighbours gathered around for the occasion at 1215 Pembroke Street to witness the official opening of the 800th Little Free Library.

This one in particular was dreamed up by Gaye Sihin, an admirer of architecture who sought to build a scale replica of his own beloved Fernwood character home.

Sihin had a former management consultant and owner of I Used To Be A Pallet, Ray Young build it as he specializes in upcycling old pallets and turning them into beautiful Little Free Libraries.

Sihin will have the honour of cutting the ribbon on this milestone Little Free Library, along with a representative of Victoria’s city council, Saanich Councillor Teale Phelps Bondaroff, Young and any neighbours who wish to attend.

These Little Free Libraries were conceptualized on the “leave a book, take a book,” methodology which allows people in the community to have greater access to new reading materials that someone else is finished with.

The Greater Victoria Placemaking Network is the organization responsible for spearheading, tracking and expanding the number of Little Free Libraries within the Capital Regional District (CRD).

Phelps Bondaroff leads this endeavour and can be frequently seen riding his bicycle with a trailer full of gently used books to keep these soon-to-be 800 Little Free Libraries stocked with new additions.

To date, the Saanich councillor says the project has delivered over 85,000 books to Little Free Libraries across the CRD. They have also mapped out all existing projects and helped set up over 120.

The full map of all 800 Little Free Libraries in Greater Victoria can be found online, here.
