Recent poll finds British Columbians are shopping cheaper this holiday season

The holiday season is a unique mixture of fun and stressful for many people in BC and across Canada.

This year in particular, a recent study found that most are limiting their spending as compared to previous years.

According to a Research Co. poll, nearly half (47%) of all the respondents from British Columbia said they are planning on spending less than $500 on gifts, food and decorations this holiday season.

Meanwhile, around 30% said they are planning to spend between $500 and $1,000 and 19% said they would spend over that amount.

Of the respondents, the poll found that men typically spend more on their holiday shopping than women and people between the ages of 18 and 34-years-old spend the most of any age range.

The poll also asked respondents whether or not they planned on spending more, less or about the same on their holiday shopping as last year.

To this question, British Columbians said that the majority of people (64%) plan on spending around the same on their gift, food and decoration shopping.

Also of note is that 22% of BC respondents said they would likely spend less this year while 13% said they would spend more, meaning more people are leaning toward saving their money.

The financial blues haven’t defeated British Columbians’ holiday spirits though!

The Research Co. poll found that 58% of those polled said they anticipated having a holiday season that would be more fun than stressful, while 25% believed that their stress levels would outweigh their holiday fun and 17% said they were unsure about how they would feel.
