FedEx driver flees scene after vehicle crashes into hydro box in Colwood causing fire

Share

Over two dozen BC Hydro customers are without power on Tuesday after a FedEx vehicle crashed into it while the driver made a delivery.

According to posts on social media, the truck, likely left in neutral, rolled back into the transformer, causing it to burst into flames.

Several neighbours said they could see the driver inside the vehicle when they first checked on what happened after hearing a loud bang outside their home.

The incident occurred just after 9 a.m. on Caspian Drive—where neighbors said they saw the truck on top of the box at one point.

Photos sent to Victoria Buzz show the lid off the transformer completely engulfed in flames, with sparks flying from the unit as Colwood firefighters can be seen stationed back until hydro crews could arrive.

According to BC Hydro, crews are on the scene repairing the damage and as of this publication, the power is not expected to be restored until around midnight.

West Shore RCMP confirmed to Victoria Buzz that the driver went to deliver a parcel and had placed the vehicle in park; however, it was ineffective and rolled down the hill into the power box, sparking it.

The driver fled the scene with the vehicle and was followed and stopped by a member of the public who alerted the police.

He was issued a two violation tickets. One for failure to remain at the scene and another for having no insurance, as the vehicle had been without insurance since November 2023.

The truck was also issued a Box 1 Notice and Order, then it was towed immediately and needs a full mechanical inspection due to the parking brake being inoperative.
