Former Romeo’s location on Blanshard Street in Victoria to be converted into park

Downtown Victoria will soon boast another green space to bring additional vibrancy to residents and visitors alike!

The park will be built on Blanshard Street, where the City of Victoria has purchased two adjoining properties at 1703 and 1725-1745—the former locations of Romeo’s and Urbana Kitchens.

While the former Romeo’s space has remained vacant for years, Urbana continues to operate at the location (1725-1745), but will be moving locations by April 1st. Additional details will be announced soon.

The building in between the two properties that houses the Philippine Bayanihan Community Centre won’t be impacted by the sale. The space is approximately 25,000 square feet and will ensure downtown keeps an essence of green in a rapidly growing urban area.

“This purchase marks a significant step in the City’s commitment to improving the public, social and outdoor experience of being a Victorian. A new downtown park will boost quality of life for downtown residents and add vibrancy to our core,” said Mayor Marianne Alto.

“These properties represent a strategic investment in our community, intentionally aligning with Council’s objectives to expand green spaces and recreational facilities for residents and visitors to enjoy.”

The new park will be open to all ages and abilities, so everyone in the community can gather and use it for recreation or relaxing under the new trees they’ll be planting.

“For several years, the City has been seeking opportunities to increase parks and green spaces in areas experiencing high population growth,” said Deputy City Manager Thomas Soulliere.

“This future park will provide a welcoming new open place in the heart of the city for people to play, relax and enjoy nature.”

The $11-million land purchase was funded by City reserves established for acquiring land for parks and open spaces.

This new park is a part of the City’s Official Community Plan and aligns with a number of other strategic priorities that the City is working towards.

The specific timing estimations of the park development will be determined later in the year.
