National Geographic names Vancouver Island resort as one of their top picks for travel this year

Share

Recently, the renowned National Geographic magazine named their top 20 list for adventures of the year and they included a spot right here on Vancouver Island.

Among this list are adventures such as gallery hopping in São Paulo, wandering the tea trails in Sri Lanka and sitting at number 20, sleeping on the water in British Columbia.

National Geographic says that the Tofino Wilderness Resort is so worthwhile that a stay there, on the water, is better than an infinite number of adventure possibilities.

The resort is well-known and highly sought out due to its remoteness and the fact that it is a floating resort and spa, so guests can quite literally sleep on the water.

The floating resort features 16 rooms and a spa, all of which look out upon the open ocean from the Clayoquot Sound shoreline.

The site of the resort was initially a lumber mill dating back to the 1920s.

The mill burnt down and eventually, the initial building was erected on site, built entirely from lumber which was felled on the resort’s property itself.

It’s owned by the Ahousaht First Nation who refurbished and renovated the space beginning in 2004 when the resort was closed to the public.

Now that it’s back open again the Tofino Wilderness Resort has reemerged a mainstay of the area and will now be known as a world-renowned place to stay.

Natural Geographic also pointed would-be travellers to check out some of the many whale watching tours while on this adventure and to visit sites such as the Freedom Cove artists’ sanctuary.

This sanctuary is a floating homestead which operates completely off-the-grid.

How does this adventure sound to you? Do you think this resort and a getaway to Tofino can compete with adventures like a horseback riding safari in Kenya or Bear watching in Katmai National Park, Alaska?
