According to RCMP, the searches are related to an alleged early morning assault that took place on Monday, January 1st.

Shortly after 7 a.m. on January 1st, police responded to a report claiming that a man was in medical distress near the 300 block of Tenth Street.

Police attended the scene and discovered the man had serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

BCEHS paramedics were dispatched to the scene and transported the victim to the Nanaimo Hospital for medical treatment.

Nanaimo RCMP have taken charge of the investigation and said they will be at the locationfor the foreseeable future.

“The public should be aware that they will likely see an increased police presence in the area while the investigation continues,” said Constable Mike Thompson, Media Relations Officer.

A single suspect has been taken into custody and officers believe that there is no risk to the public as no other persons of interest are being sought at this time.
