While the 2024 World Junior Championship might not have been the ideal tournament for Canadian hockey enthusiasts, Victorians have been given something to celebrate.

Victoria Royals’ forward, Robin Sapoušek has won a bronze medal with team Czechia—the same team responsible for knocking Canada out of the tournament.

The Czech team’s journey to securing the bronze was nothing short of spectacular.

Facing a 5-2 deficit against Finland late in the second period, they mounted an incredible comeback, eventually triumphing 8-5.

What’s even more astonishing is the rapidity with which they turned the game around.

Within a span of just 50 seconds, the Czechs netted an astounding four goals, shattering the previous record set by Canada in 1983, which stood at 68 seconds for four goals.

The tournament, hosted in Sweden, has been a stage for unexpected turns and remarkable displays of skill.  For Sapoušek, this accomplishment not only signifies personal success but also underscores the caliber of talent present in the Victoria Royals organization.

As Victorians celebrate Sapoušek’s achievement, Czechia is now celebrating winning medals at the tournament two years in a row after going nearly two decades without.

Sapoušek’s return is eagerly anticipated, expected to provide a critical infusion in Victoria’s push at securing a playoff berth.

The team is currently on 5-game road trip that will see the team travel over 5,000 km east. The Royals are in action Saturday night taking on Regina Pats.

As of this publication, Sweden and the US are battling it out for the gold medal, United States are currently up 2-1 in the second period.
