Firefighters don’t only get called to rescue cats up trees, sometimes it’s a dog who has gotten loose and they will help wrangle the pup.

On Sunday, February 25th, two fire engines got the call that a dog was running loose on a construction site fraught with hazards in Esquimalt.

The site in which the dog was running loose was a 10-storey building’s site on Constance Avenue.

Firefighters say there was a gap in the site’s external fence which likely allowed her to get in before she could not get out again.

The dog was found up on the roof after some searching—very cold, scared and likely disoriented from the wind.

“Crews managed to catch the pup’s leash while it hid scared under a pile of construction material,” the Esquimalt Firefighters wrote in a social media post.

“Worried it might pull from its leash, and unable to coax it out with snacks, it was decided to wait for animal control to pull the pup to safety.”

When animal control got there, they had the tools needed to secure the dog and carefully get her out of hiding.

The firefighters say that the situation could have been much worse if it weren’t for the construction site workers who first noticed the dog and called for help.

Although the firefighters are unsure if the dog has been reconnected with her family yet, they say that animal control will be working toward the goal of reuniting her with them.
