Victoria’s Rooms + Spaces closes just months after grand opening

A recently opened home and decor store in Victoria has closed its doors just a few months after its grand opening.

The Rooms + Spaces chain of home decor retailers has shuttered its Victoria location, taking over a vacated space previously occupied by the retailer Bed Bath & Beyond.

Last April, Bed Bath & Beyond declared bankruptcy prompting Canadian businessman, Doug Putman, to fill the void left with his own rendition of a home goods store.

Putman is known for saving Toys “R” Us Canada when it went through something similar.

Shortly after it was announced Bed Bath & Beyond was closing across Canada, Putman took over 21 of the defunct locations to replace it with a rooms + spaces.

Victoria’s Mayfair location was one of the 21 locations that was acquired and rebranded.

The new company sold similar wares to what Bed Bath & Beyond offered, such as kitchen gadgets, towels, bedding, and other household items.

Back in August of last year, the company announced the opening of 24 new stores across Canada. However, their website now only displays two active stores, located in Edmonton and Brantford, ON.

Toys “R” Us Canada, which was located across the road, at Mayfair Shopping Centre, had a small section inside the Rooms + Spaces after closing in January of last year.

Not long after, Canada’s favourite toy store announced it would be returning to Victoria with a full-fledged store located at Uptown Shopping Centre.

The new location opened briefly as a pop-up location for the holiday season and has temporarily closed for renovation to convert the new location to a full size store.
