Here’s why you might see superheroes across the city of Victoria this weekend

Avid readers, comic book lovers and superhero supporters, this is for you!

On Saturday, May 4th, the Superheroes of Victoria and the Greater Victoria Placemaking Network (GVPN) are teaming up to celebrate Free Comic Book Day in armour and style.

To bring extra adventure and excitement to the day, they’ve decided to host a little free library (LFL) superhero expedition for the community!

This means that from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, superheroes will be stationed at five LFLs in Fernwood, where they will be giving out free comic books and graphic novels.

“Reading is a superpower! Literacy is a cause that has always been near and dear to the Superheroes of Victoria, so we’re excited to partner with the Greater Victoria Placemaking Network to share our love of reading with the Fernwood community,” said Sonia Nicholson, Marketing Director, Superheroes of Victoria.

These Superheroes of Victoria are a fantastic group of individuals who support a wide range of important charitable causes in the community while also donning the garb of caped crusaders.

The event is part of GVPN’s 10 year anniversary as well as the perfect opportunity to celebrate placemaking, literacy, and the cozy iconic Fernwood area—which has some of the highest numbers of LFLs in Greater Victoria.

If you aren’t familiar, LFLs are little public ‘leave a book, take a book’ boxes that can be found throughout the city and come in all shapes and sizes.

While most share books across all genres, there are a growing number of LFLs that focus on one specific genre, such as children’s books, poetry, language books and more.

There are also LFLs dedicated to sharing plants, toys, board games, art supplies and plenty of other incredible goodies.

Free Comic Book Day was created in an effort to promote literacy and bring new readers to independent comic book stores to simultaneously support the vibrant industry.

“If you are looking for a supercharged way to celebrate placemaking and get a free comic book or graphic novel, come on down to Fernwood this Saturday,” said Teale Phelps Bondaroff, Pocket Places Project Lead and GVPN volunteer.
