Here’s the latest update on upcoming Gorge Road bike lane expansion

Share

Construction is now underway on the new Gorge Road improvements which include a protected bike lane expansion that will connect with the recently finished Government Street expansion.

This expansion will only go up until the Saanich-Victoria border on Harriet Street.

The City of Victoria has provided an update for those living in the area or commuting through it.

Work is reportedly taking place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday to Friday with advance notice being given if a weekend or holiday should be impacted.

In the week of Monday, May 21st to Sunday, May 26th, the current roadway will be demolished between Harriet Road to Balfour Avenue so underground electrical systems can be installed.

This work will cause noise and dust in the area as well as minor traffic impacts with just one lane being open per direction along Gorge Road.

The following week, from Monday May 27th to Sunday, June 2nd, crews will be demolishing the existing roadway between Irma Place and Carroll Street, installing underground electrical systems and pouring new concrete sidewalks near Irma Place.

This work will cause some impacts including noise, dust and one lane being open per direction along Gorge Road. There is also potential for single lane alternating traffic turning on and off of Irma Place.

The City says this work is being done along Gorge Road to expand the current bike lane infrastructure, re-pave the road, update bus stops, provide better accessibility and improve other safety measures.

The project is slated to be complete in spring 2025.
