If you missed the spectacular display over Vancouver Island earlier this month, this is your chance to witness the mesmerizing aurora borealis once again.
Although this upcoming event might not rival the brilliance of the previous show, it promises to be a captivating sight—if it materializes.
The same sunspot that contributed to the earlier display will rotate back into a position facing Earth, offering another opportunity to see the northern lights.
According to the latest forecasts from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the best viewing conditions will be Friday night for Vancouver Island.

NOAA, which rates geomagnetic storms on a five-point scale, predicts a moderate G2 storm peaking tonight. This is in contrast to the severe G4 storm that lit up the skies in early May.
Space Weather Canada has also issued a major geomagnetic storm watch for the auroral zone. This zone encompasses much of the territories and northern parts of the provinces, making it a prime area for aurora sightings.
Tips for viewing the Northern Lights on Vancouver Island:
To maximize your chances of seeing the northern lights on Vancouver Island, consider the following tips:
- Find a Dark Location: Seek out areas away from city lights and artificial light pollution. Ideal spots include parks, beaches, or open countryside.
- Check the Weather: Clear or mostly clear skies are essential for a good view. Be sure to check the weather forecast for cloud cover.
- Face North: Auroras are typically visible to the north, so find a location with an unobstructed view of the northern horizon.
- Time Your Viewing: The best time to see the aurora is late at night, with peak visibility between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. Pacific Time. Plan your outing accordingly.
- Give Your Eyes Time to Adjust: Allow at least 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness. This will enhance your ability to see the aurora clearly. Avoid looking at your phone during this time.
- Bring Warm Clothing and Snacks: Nighttime temperatures can be chilly, so dress warmly and bring snacks and drinks to stay comfortable.
With these tips in mind, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy the stunning display of the northern lights.
