Saanich district councillor Nathalie Chambers has launched an online fundraising campaign on behalf of a resident who had her home broken into multiple times while she was in hospital.
Anne Tolmie was being treated for pneumonia where she had to spend numerous days away from her home in Saanich.
During this time she had her home broken into six times and countless of her possessions and property were either stolen or damaged in the process.
“The burglar ransacked everything floor to ceiling, including antiques, mementos, paperwork, and family photos,” wrote Chambers in the GoFundMe campaign.
“In addition to the numerous sentimental and valuable belongings that were stolen from her home, the perpetrator also harvested all of the copper pipes from her basement, deeming her house unlivable until further notice.”
Chambers says that since word got out about Tolmie’s misfortune, many community members have been searching for a way to help her out in a tangible way so the Saanich councillor decided she would launch the fundraiser.
“Anne has an adamant desire to return home, and she is asking for financial donations that will be put towards buying a safe, clean, and livable trailer for her to move into,” wrote Chambers.
“Big or small, your donation will have a huge impact on fulfilling Anne’s wish.”
As of this publication, the GoFundMe campaign has garnered Tolmie $1,960 of the $10,000 goal.
“It is in times like these that we need to band together and care for the elderly in our community.”
Victoria Buzz reached out to Saanich Police for a statement on the matter, but they said they were unable to provide one because the investigation remains open.
