10 things to do in and around Victoria for this Father’s Day weekend—June 15th and 16th

Get ready for an epic Father’s Day weekend, Victoria!

For all you last minute planners out there, we’ve included our compilation of Father’s Day activities and gift ideas that was published earlier this week.

Other incredible events happening this weekend include a string concert from the Victoria Conservatory of Music, iconic comedian Kevin James Thornton, and Sidney’s Pride festival!

Plus, don’t forget about the community favourite FernFest as we head into its second and final day.

Here’s 10 things to do in and around Victoria this Father’s Day weekend—June 15th and 16th:

Saanich Peninsula Hospital’s 50th anniversary celebration

This weekend, an anniversary event will be held at Saanich Peninsula Hospital to celebrate its 50th year serving the community. 

Saturday’s celebration will kick off with a mini bazaar and craft fair in the parking lot from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Then at 1:30 p.m., a ceremony will be held at the hospital’s main entrance, in which a brand new land acknowledgement sign will be unveiled.

Pride Exhibit at Sidney MuseumThe Sidney Museum will have a Pride exhibit titled, Reading Between the Lines for Local Queer History on display until the end of June!

The exhibit features information about local Queer history, AIDS on the Saanich
Peninsula, David Tuff’s film Are We Going Backwards?, and items from The
Transgender Archives at the University of Victoria.

It will be on display throughout June and will then become a part of the permanent upstairs gallery.

Grab a Pup Patty

From June 10th to June 23rd, A&W will be serving up a delicious treat with a special purpose—the Pup Patty, sold for $2 each.

These Pup Patties are made from their specialty premium grass-fed beef, but without the seasoning to ensure every dog can safely savour it!

Each patty purchased will see a portion of the proceeds donated to non-profit organizations in Canada dedicated to the raising and training of service dogs, including the Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS).

The Pup Patty is only available for ordering at A&W drive-thrus, as pets are not allowed inside the dining area.

FernFest

FernFest is a beloved community event that always draws in impressive crowds and offers non-stop entertainment for all ages!

It kicked off on June 14th and runs through until Saturday evening—plenty of time to check out the featured musicians, performers, magic, artisan vendors, kids zone, walking tours and much more.

There will also be lots of food and beer to treat yourself too!

FernFest is free, so gather all of your loved ones and get down to Fernwood this week!

Sidney Pride Festival

A day of joy, acceptance and celebration for all—the Sidney Pride Festival is back on Saturday, June 15th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Beacon Park, Sidney!

From captivating drag performances to lively music and dancing, attendees are in for an unforgettable experience.

The fun doesn’t end there! As the day winds down, guests are welcome to attend the Cheers for Queers After Party at Small Gods Brewery from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Kevin James Thornton at Capital Ballroom

A special show with comedian Kevin James Thornton is happening at Capital Ballroom this Saturday!

He is well known for his hilarious and heartfelt moments of self reflection about growing up gay in a religious community. He has over 2 million followers on social media and has toured three successful one-man-shows nationwide.

Tickets start at $32.50 and can be purchased here.

String Faculty Recital: Victoria Conservatory of Music 

In celebration of the Victoria Conservatory of Music’s 60th anniversary, there have been a series of ‘Focus on Strings’ concerts, and the next one is this Saturday!

The Strings Faculty Artists in Concert will present a wonderous performance from the faculty’s musicians, featuring a great ensemble of works from the 18th, 19th, and 20th century.

Admission is by donation!

Vintage Outdoor Pop-Up

Get outside and explore the wonders of Island Vintage’s outdoor vintage pop-up!

Hosted at Lazy Susan’s, they’ll have multiple vendors to check out—stocked with goodies such as toys, retro clothing, and more.

There will also be popcorn and cotton candy available!

Veselka Ukrainian Dancers

Head over to McPherson Playhouse and catch the Veselka Ukrainian Dancers in action!

As described, they’re a dynamic group known for their ability to evoke nostalgia, create comedic scenes, and captivate audiences with their lyrical movements high-energy footwork.

Lisa Hall, the Artistic Director, is always striving for excellence, and looks to promote and preserve Ukrainian culture through music and dance.

Tickets are $29.75 for adults and $26.75 and can be purchased here.
