Ceremony planned to mark Saanich Peninsula Hospital’s 50th anniversary

This weekend, on Saturday, June 15th, an anniversary event will be held at Saanich Peninsula Hospital to celebrate its 50th year serving the community.

The hospital first opened its doors to provide Saanich Peninsula residents with much needed health care services in February of 1974.

Saanich Peninsula Hospital has been providing care with 75 extended care beds; ambulatory, diagnostic and surgical services; as well as emergency, inpatient, palliative and long-term care.

The facility also hosts an Indigenous Liaison Nurse and Patient Navigator. Having this resource on-site was implemented in recent years in efforts to better support Indigenous patients on the peninsula.

“Saanich Peninsula Hospital has been a trusted pillar of healthcare in our community for the past 50 years,” said Leah Hollins, Island Health Board Chair.

“The dedicated staff, physicians, and volunteers have worked tirelessly to provide exceptional care with compassion and expertise. This milestone is a celebration of their commitment to improving the lives of residents.”

Saturday’s celebration will kick off with a mini bazaar and craft fair in the parking lot from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Then at 1:30 p.m., a ceremony will be held at the hospital’s main entrance, in which a brand new land acknowledgement sign will be unveiled.

Island Health says that this signage was developed in collaboration with the four First Nations on the Saanich Peninsula. Elders from those Nations have been invited to attend the unveiling ceremony.

Following the unveiling, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., a community celebration will take place outside the hospital’s long-term care facility. There will be a BBQ and cake for those in attendance.

Additionally, inside the facility’s chapel, photographs and detailed histories of the peninsula will be displayed for people to explore and learn from.

“We are proud of the innovative approaches our teams take to deliver high-quality, person-centered care every day,” reflected Erin Hohl, Saanich Peninsula Hospital’s Site Director.

“This anniversary reminds us of our deep roots serving Vancouver Island families.”
