New mental health and substance-use treatment centre to open in Colwood

A brand new mental health resource and substance-use treatment facility is coming to Colwood once construction is complete.

This western communities service hub has been designed to meet a variety of mental-health and addiction needs; offering same-day walk-in or call-in counselling and assessments, five days a week.

The hub will connect those who need ongoing support with a coordinator who can work one-on-one with clients, tailoring treatments to each person individually.

“Mental health and addiction challenges can affect anyone, and as our communities grow, so does the need for dependable care close by,” said Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions.

“With this hub, we are bringing together mental-health and addiction services, and supporting individuals and families right where they live. This makes it easier for people to get all the care they need, where and when they need it.”

The staff working out of this new hub will include professionals in fields such as psychiatry, addiction medicine, nursing, counselling, occupational therapy and peer support.

According to the Province, the team will be able to adapt to each person’s evolving needs, ensuring ongoing support throughout their recovery—a model which was developed with local First Nations and Indigenous communities.

“Island Health recognizes and is responding to the growing need for mental-health and addictions care in our communities,” said Leah Hollins, Board Chair, Island Health.

“By providing local services for low to moderate mental-health and addiction needs and connecting those with higher needs to specialized care, we are creating a co-ordinated and effective care system.”

The facility is located at 681 Allandale Road in Colwood and is set to open later this year.
