North Saanich home destroyed by early morning fire

A home on the Saanich Peninsula was completely destroyed by fire in the early hours of Sunday.

North Saanich Fire crews were dispatched to a residence in the 1100 block of Highview Terrace. The Sidney and Central Saanich fire departments provided assistance.

Upon arrival, the first responding fire crews assessed the blaze and requested additional resources. They confirmed that all occupants of the home had escaped safely.

Due to the size of the blaze, North Saanich Fire said fire crews adopted a defensive strategy, ensuring that the surrounding homes and forest were protected from igniting due to ember cast and radiant heat.

Fire crews used 1,600 feet of high-volume hose to boost hydrant pressure to overcome elevation challenges and the long driveway leading to the fire’s origin.

During the structure fire, a wildfire was reported nearby, with small smouldering grass fires and some small shrubs and trees igniting due to the heat.

“Although the home where the fire started is a complete loss, the quick response from all three municipalities provided many resources swiftly, efficiently backfilled by volunteers and auxiliary members,” said North Saanich Fire.

Approximately 35 firefighters from the three departments were on scene for many hours.

North Saanich fire crews will remain on scene for most of the day to extinguish hot spots and monitor the area.
