Ontario man wanted for daughter’s murder arrested on Vancouver Island

David William Thomas, a 48-year-old man wanted for the 2022 murder of his daughter, has been arrested on Vancouver Island.

In the early hours of June 25th, 2022, emergency crews in Chatham-Kent responded to a fire at 149 Edgar Street in Chatham, Ontario.

Upon extinguishing the blaze, they discovered the lifeless body of 22-year-old Bayli Sellars.

An extensive investigation was launched to determine the cause of the fire and Sellars’ death, involving multiple agencies including the Chatham-Kent Fire Department, the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office, the Regional Coroner’s Office, the RCMP, and the Chatham-Kent Police Service.

Following nearly two years of rigorous investigative efforts, a Canada-wide warrant was issued for Thomas’s arrest on May 7th, of this year.

Thomas was charged with first-degree murder, five counts of arson with disregard for human life, indignity to a body, and arson for fraudulent purposes.

The breakthrough in the case came on May 24th, when investigators from the Chatham-Kent Police Service, in collaboration with the RCMP, apprehended Thomas in Fanny Bay, between Parksville and Courtenay.

Following his arrest, Thomas made an initial court appearance in BC before being transported back to Chatham-Kent.

On May 28th, Thomas appeared in Chatham court, where he was remanded into custody.

His next court appearance is set for June 11th.

Sellars loved bowling, soccer and rugby and loved taking pictures and being in pictures, an obituary reads.

“Her smile and the beautiful but most often goofy poses will be memories that we will hold on to. Mom best liked the grinch face.”
