Report of man with pistol in Sidney quickly resolved: RCMP

No charges are being recommended after police received reports of an adult male with a “pistol” in Sidney.

On Wednesday, June 12th, Sidney/North Saanich RCMP received a report of a man brandishing a pistol in the area of Third Street and Amelia Avenue.

Officers responded “promptly and with caution, prioritizing public safety,” a spokesperson with Sidney/North Saanich RCMP told Victoria Buzz.

The individual was quickly identified and apprehended.

Upon further investigation, officers determined that the pistol was, in fact, a black BB gun closely resembling a real firearm.

Given this clarification, the man was released without charge.

“I would like to remind members of the public that realistic looking bb and pellet guns can be easily mistaken for real firearms and police will respond accordingly to firearms calls to protect public safety,”  states Cst. Tim Cosgrove, media relations officer for Sidney/North Saanich RCMP.
