Saanich Police say they have arrested a driver for speeding and dangerous driving after seeing footage on social media.

The footage was featured in a video posted on Sunday, June 9th that featured a green Mercedes weaving in and out of traffic and passing other vehicles on the shoulder of the Pat Bay Highway, according to police.

Saanich Police say the motorist arrested reached speeds of 219 km/h.

“The driver’s actions were dangerous and reckless,” said Chief Constable Dean Duthie, Saanich Police.

“Lives of other motorists and road users were put at a heightened and unnecessary level of risk. Behaviour like this will not be tolerated on our roads.”

The owner of the car is reportedly not the one who was driving it as police say that he is cooperating in the investigation and has identified who was driving the vehicle.

The driver, a 24-years-old Saanich man, has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving without a valid license and driving while using an electronic device.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court sometime in July.
