Support young artists: Camosun College students hosting furniture exhibition next week

Support the community’s young artists!

The graduating students from the Fine Furniture program at Camosun College are showcasing their newly acquired skills and talents in a public gallery.

On display will feature a variety of unique seating that they have designed and built, an exhibition of chairs!

The show will take place at Arts Centre at Cedar Hill from June 19th to July 14th, and an opening reception will take place on June 19th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Here, attendees will have the opportunity to engage, celebrate and meet the students behind the hard work.

“The capstone project features chairs because they can be one of the most challenging woodworking forms to master,” said Sandra Carr, program leader and instructor in Fine Furniture.

“Every chair on display echoes the skill, talent and vision of its creator that was developed throughout a journey of creative discovery.”

According to a media release, all of the wood used in the chairs is Garry Oak from Vancouver Island Woodworker’s Guild’s wood recovery program.

This means the wood is local, and was recovered from urban trees that were declared dangerous or had been blown down.

The Fine Furniture program is a 10-month, full-time study, and requires no prior work experience.

Many students coming out of this hands-on and theory-based course are said to find apprenticeships in furniture making, cabinetmaking, carpentry or other adjacent trades.

Students learn about the history of furniture making, design and the environmental challenges that face the present world.

They also learn about the differing qualities of wood and what they can do to create unique pieces that are both works of art and functional.

Admission to the show is free! The hours vary, so if you’re visiting after the opening reception, be sure to check the website before going.
