Fatal plane crash near Sidney that killed former astronaut caught on camera (VIDEO)

A tragic ending has come for a former astronaut following a plane crash east of Vancouver Island on Friday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded to a potential plane crash between two US islands, located east of the Saanich Peninsula.

The incident prompted an immediate search and rescue operations by US Coast Guard units.

Response units from US Coast Guard Station Bellingham and Air Station Port Angeles have been mobilized for search and rescue operations.

The crash site was located about 25km from Sidney.

Apollo 8’s lunar module pilot William Anders, 90, was identified as the pilot of a vintage US Air Force plane.

Anders had been an Air Force fighter pilot in the 1950s.

Family and friends identified the Anders as the pilot of the plane and confirmed his passing. Anders lived in San Juan County for the past three decades.
