It’s never a great time to close a water park in the summer, but unfortunately, due to concerns, two Saanich water parks were closed.
On Friday, July 19th, the District released a statement indicating the splash pads at Beckwith and Rutledge parks had to be closed due to a maintenance issue with some of the equipment.
The issue was first discovered at Rutledge Park, and Saanich staff have now examined the equipment at Beckwith Park and found a similar problem.
According to the District, potable water is entering the storm drain system, which may have impacts on aquatic life downstream.
Both water parks were closed out of an abundance of caution as staff investigate.
Rutledge Park just underwent a major $1.3 million transformation and was recently reopened with the brand new splash pad.
In addition to the new splash pad, the park also now features a brand-new washroom and change room building, as well as modern playground equipment.
“The district would like to assure the public there are no human health concerns,” said Saanich in a media release Friday.
Victoria Buzz has reached out to the District to see when the splash pads are expected to reopen, and we will update this article once we hear back.
