Oak Bay Police are currently investigating a note that was attached to the Multifaith Centre at UVic as a possible hate crime.

On July 5th, UVic security staff discovered a paper, written in both Arabic and English, attached to the chapel which appeared to be hate-motivated.

Officers from the Saanich Police Department, who were already on site at UVic, assisted Oak Bay Police with the investigation.

A hate-crimes investigator promptly reviewed the content of the paper, which has also been forwarded to the RCMP’s hate crime unit for further analysis and to check for similar incidents in other areas.

At this time, there are no known suspects.

“The Oak Bay Police Department and the Saanich Police Department take incidents of hate very seriously and we are committed to thoroughly investigating this matter,” stated Deputy Chief Kris Rice of the Oak Bay Police Department.

According to police, the note appears to target the Iran, Palestine, and Muslim community.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Oak Bay Police Department at 250-592-2424 or to Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
