Two Victoria Royals players will be heading to Hockey Canada summer camps.

The team announced earlier this week that forward Cole Reschny has been invited to the Team Canada selection camp for the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, and defenceman Keaton Verhoeff has been invited to Team Canada’s 2024 National Under-17 Development Camp.

17-year-old Cole Reschny completed his first season with the Royals in 2023-24, scoring 21 goals and 38 assists for 59 points in 61 games.

His 59 points were second-most on the team and fifth among WHL rookies.

Reschny, from Macklin, SK, also represented Canada Red at the 2023 World U17 Championship, where he tallied 8 points in 7 games.

The Hlinka Gretzky Cup is an annual U18 tournament, taking place from August 5th-10th at Rogers Place in Edmonton. Canada will face Switzerland, Slovakia, and Sweden in the round-robin before the knockout stages begin on August 9th.

The athletes will battle for a chance to represent the Maple Leaf at the tournament.

Keaton Verhoeff, the Royals’ fourth overall pick in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft, is 16 years old. In 2023-24, he played 22 games for RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna U18, scoring 27 points, and 12 games for the Royals, registering 2 assists.

Verhoeff, from Fort Saskatchewan, AB, represented Canada at the 2024 Youth Olympic Games in South Korea, scoring 3 points in 4 games.

Verhoeff will attend the Hockey Canada Camp from July 18th-23rd, aiming to secure a spot on Team Canada’s roster for the World Under-17 Championship in Sarnia, ON, from November 1st-9th.

As for the Royals, their home opener for the upcoming season will take place on September 20th—with back-to-back games against the Tri-City Americans at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.

Victoria and Tri-City met four times during the 2023-24 season, with the Royals earning wins in all four games.
