Another heat warning issued for some parts of Vancouver Island this week

It’s gonna be another hot week on Vancouver Island.

Island Health has issued a heart warning for some parts of Eastern Vancouver Island, including areas from Courtenay to Campbell River, Duncan to Nanaimo and Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay.

Nanaimo is currently under a heat warning as they are facing highs of up to 30°C on Thursday, August 8th. Over the weekend, the highs will be between 26°C and 25°C, according to Environment Canada.

Similarly, Courtenay is facing high temperatures of 30°C on Thursday and highs of 26°C to 27°C throughout the rest of the week.

“A ridge of high pressure is bringing high temperatures to the region,” said Environment Canada in their heat warning alert.

“Heat affects everyone, but the risks are greater for: seniors, people who live alone, people with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or respiratory disease, people with mental illness such as schizophrenia, depression, or anxiety, people with substance use disorders, people with limited mobility.”

The national weather authority recommends checking on family, friends and neighbours, who are at higher risk—particularly if they are living alone and making sure they have access to a cool space.

Additionally, Environment Canada says to never leave susceptible people or pets inside parked vehicles.

For those who are becoming overheated, cool places such as tree-shaded areas, splash pads, misting stations or air-conditioned spots like public buildings are recommended as the best ways to cool down.

There is no official heat warning in Victoria this week, but temperatures are still expected to get as high as 26°C and will remain at that level through until next week.

With several big events taking place over the weekend, such as the Phillips Backyard Music Festival’s ‘Reverb’ and Whistle Buoy Brewing’s Big Patio Days, Victorians are advised to stay hydrated and seek shaded, cool areas when possible.

Don’t forget your sunscreen!
