Beckwith Park splash pad reopening this weekend as test following mechanical issues

Share

This weekend, the District of Saanich says they will be temporarily reopening the Beckwith Park splash pad after it was shut down due to mechanical issues.

Similarly, the brand new splash pad in Rutledge Park had to be shut down soon after its opening due to the same issue.

According to the District, these two impacted splash pads were shut down because it was determined that the runoff water may be entering storm drains and could have impacts on wildlife downstream.

They also noted when the pads were initially shut down that Beckwith Park would need more investigation and research, as it is an older splash pad with different considerations to be accounted for.

As of now, the Rutledge Park splash pad has been reopened, but will be shut down when rain is forecasted.

With Beckwith Park’s splash pad, there will be a temporary reopening to test the system between Saturday, August 10th and Monday, August 12th.

During these days, the pad’s hours will be between 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The District says they would like to assure the public that there are no health concerns at this time.

“This temporary reopening will allow for the collection of water samples downstream to understand possible impacts to aquatic life,” wrote the District in a media release.

“Results will help inform staff as they continue to pursue short- and long-term solutions to get the splash pad up and running normally again.”

The splash pad will once again be closed again beginning on Tuesday, August 13th so staff can evaluate the results and explore further options.

Additional information on future reopening will be made public as soon as it is available.
