In a display of human compassion, a Nova Scotia resident vacationing in Victoria has been recognised by VicPD for his selfless actions during a fatal motor vehicle incident earlier this year.
On March 1st, a tragic accident unfolded in the 700-block of Hillside Avenue after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle.
The section of road between Blanshard and Douglas Streets was closed off to both pedestrians and motorists for several hours during an investigation.
While many were aware of the fatal vehicle collision, what people didn’t see was the heroic actions taking place at the scene thanks to Adam, a Halifax man who happened to be visiting on vacation.
An extraordinary act of kindness unfolded as Adam, who was on the scene, provided critical aid to the victim.
Despite the chaos and distress of the situation, Adam chose to remain by the pedestrian’s side, offering comfort even after BC Emergency Health Services paramedics arrived.
His primary goal, as he later shared with officers, was to ensure that the victim did not have to face their final moments alone.

The pedestrian ultimately succumbed to their injuries at the scene, but Adam’s unwavering compassion did not go unnoticed. His actions were brought to the attention of the responding VicPD officer, who subsequently nominated him for a Civic Service Award.
Due to the need to return home, Adam was unable to attend the award ceremony in person. However, fate had a hand in the recognition of his heroism.
This year’s annual Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) conference, where Chief Manak was scheduled to speak, was being held in Halifax.
This presented a unique opportunity to honour Adam’s remarkable act of kindness in his home province. Plans were made to transport the award nearly 4,500 kilometres across the country and arrange a special ceremony in Halifax.
“On behalf of the entire Victoria Police Department, I would like to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to Adam for his compassion and selflessness during what turned out to be a very tragic incident. Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family,” said Chief Del Manak.
“This story highlights a characteristic that unites us all as Canadians, regardless of which coast we are on: an unwavering desire to help one another in times of need.”
The VicPD Civic Service Award recognizes individuals who have performed notable acts of service in the community.
