RCMP have confirmed that one person died in a fiery two-vehicle crash on the Nanaimo Parkway on Saturday.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. Saturday August 10th, on the Nanaimo Parkway between the Dunster Road overpass and Doumont Road bridge.
One driver was killed in the crash while the other driver involved was sent to hospital with serious injuries.
Police, Fire and BCEHS responded to the incident which shut the road down in both directions for a considerable period of time.
Witnesses told police that a dark-coloured car with one occupant was driving southbound when it crossed the median into oncoming traffic and collided with a northbound dark-coloured SUV, which also had a single occupant.
The driver of the northbound SUV was transported to hospital but succumbed to their injuries. The adult male driver of the southbound vehicle was transported to Nanaimo hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
“Police investigators, which included a RCMP Collision Analyst, were on scene for most of the night. Police managed to speak with a number of witnesses at the scene,” said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
Investigators are asking anyone who has not yet spoken with police, or who has dashcam or other video footage of the collision itself, as well as dashcam footage of vehicles travelling southbound from the Nanoose area between 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. before the collision, to please contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
