Port Alberni RCMP arrested a woman in connection with a fire in a forested area yesterday.

On Tuesday, August 6th just after 6 p.m., an off-duty police officer reported the fire in a forested area near the Stirling Arm Forest Service Road (FSR) and the Canal Main FSR.

Police responded to the call and located a suspect believed to be responsible for the fire.

The suspect was identified as a 27-year-old woman, and was held in custody to be brought before the courts. Police plan on forwarding a detailed report to the Crown Counsel for consideration of charges.

According to RCMP, the fire was around 0.5 hectares in size and is currently being held by the Mosaic and Natural Resources.

In a media release, they reminded the public that campfires and open burning are currently restricted across BC due to heat and drought-like conditions.

There is currently one active wildfire on Vancouver Island, known as the Old Man Lake fire, located in the Sooke Potholes Regional Park area. As of last week, the fire has been contained, but it had burned out of control for several days—reaching 230 hectares.

If anyone has information on this incident, call Port Alberni RCMP at (250) 723-2424.
